Repair Rate
\[\mu=\frac{N_r}{T_r}\]

Variables

mu[μ]repair rate (repairs/time)
Nrnumber of repairs
Trtotal repair time

Description

What is this formula?

Repair Rate measures how quickly failures are corrected within a maintenance system.

It is the reciprocal concept of Mean Time To Repair (MTTR) and is widely used in maintainability and reliability engineering.

When to use it

Use this formula when:

- Evaluating maintenance performance.

- Comparing repair efficiency.

- Modeling maintainability.

- Calculating repair probabilities.

- Performing reliability studies.

Example

A maintenance department completes:

Nr = 40 repairs

During:

Tr = 200 h

Formula:

μ = Nr/Tr

Substitution:

μ = 40/200

μ = 0.20 h⁻¹

Result:

The repair rate is 0.20 repairs per hour.

Applications

- Reliability engineering

- Maintainability analysis

- Maintenance planning

- Asset management

- Downtime modeling

Note

Repair Rate is generally treated as an average value. Actual repair performance may vary depending on spare-part availability, technician experience, diagnostic complexity, and maintenance procedures.
