Description
What is this formula?
Defects Per Million Opportunities (DPMO) measures the number of defects that occur per one million defect opportunities.
It is one of the fundamental metrics used in Six Sigma quality programs to quantify process performance.
When to use it
Use this formula when:
- Evaluating manufacturing quality.
- Comparing process performance.
- Tracking Six Sigma initiatives.
- Monitoring defect reduction programs.
- Benchmarking operational excellence.
Example
A factory inspects:
U = 5,000 units
Each unit has:
O = 8 defect opportunities
The inspection identifies:
D = 40 defects
Formula:
DPMO = D/(U×O) × 10⁶
Substitution:
DPMO = 40/(5,000×8) × 1,000,000
DPMO = 40/40,000 × 1,000,000
DPMO = 1,000
Result:
The process operates at 1,000 defects per million opportunities.
Applications
- Six Sigma programs
- Statistical quality control
- Manufacturing quality assessment
- Continuous improvement
- Process benchmarking
Note
DPMO is an empirical quality metric that depends on how defect opportunities are defined. Different organizations may count opportunities differently, which can affect comparisons between processes or facilities.
