Takt Time
\[TT=\frac{Ta}{D}\]

Variables

TTtakt time (time/unit)
Taavailable production time (time period)
Dcustomer demand during the same period (units)

Description

What is this formula?

Takt Time defines the maximum allowable time to produce one unit in order to satisfy customer demand.

It synchronizes production speed with market demand and is one of the fundamental metrics used in Lean Manufacturing.

When to use it

Use this formula when:

- Designing production lines.

- Balancing workstations.

- Implementing Lean Manufacturing.

- Determining required production pace.

- Identifying bottlenecks.

Example

A factory operates:

Ta = 450 minutes/day

Customer demand is:

D = 150 units/day

Formula:

TT = Ta/D

Substitution:

TT = 450/150

TT = 3 min/unit

Result:

One unit must be completed every 3 minutes to satisfy demand.

Applications

- Lean Manufacturing

- Production balancing

- Capacity planning

- Continuous improvement programs

- Assembly line design

Note

Takt Time is a planning metric based on customer demand and available production time. Actual cycle times may differ due to downtime, quality losses, maintenance activities, or process variability. Therefore, Takt Time should be viewed as a target production rhythm rather than a guaranteed process capability.
