Variables
Description
What is this formula?
Safety Stock calculates the additional inventory required to protect against uncertainty in demand and lead time.
It helps maintain product availability and reduce the risk of stockouts while replenishment orders are in transit.
When to use it
Use this formula when:
- Demand is variable.
- Supplier lead times are uncertain.
- Service-level targets must be achieved.
- Inventory shortages are costly.
- Supply chain reliability is important.
Example
A company desires a service level corresponding to:
Z = 1.65
The standard deviation of demand during lead time is:
σL = 120 units
Formula:
SS = ZσL
Substitution:
SS = 1.65 × 120
SS = 198 units
Result:
The recommended safety stock is 198 units.
Applications
- Inventory management
- Supply chain planning
- Warehouse operations
- Service level optimization
- Demand uncertainty management
Note
This formula assumes demand variability follows a distribution that can be represented by a standard deviation and that the selected Z factor corresponds to the desired service level. More advanced inventory models may incorporate variable lead times and non-normal demand distributions.
