Variables
Description
What is this formula?
This formula calculates dissolved oxygen percent saturation by comparing the measured dissolved oxygen concentration to the saturation concentration at the same temperature and pressure conditions.
When to use it
Use it when evaluating aquatic ecosystem health, wastewater treatment performance, aeration systems, aquaculture operations, and environmental monitoring programs.
Example
Data:
DO = 7.5 mg/L
DOsat = 9.0 mg/L
Formula:
%Sat = 100(DO/DOsat)
Substitution:
%Sat = 100(7.5/9.0)
Result:
%Sat = 83.3%
Applications
Water quality monitoring, aquaculture, fisheries management, wastewater treatment, river assessment, lake studies, environmental compliance, and ecological investigations.
Note
Values near 100% indicate equilibrium with the atmosphere. Values significantly below 100% may indicate oxygen depletion caused by biological activity or pollution, while values above 100% can occur due to intense photosynthesis, aeration, or rapid pressure changes.
