Volumetric Loading Rate
\[VLR=\frac{L_{in}}{V_r}\]

Variables

VLRvolumetric loading rate (mass/volume·time)
Lininfluent pollutant loading (mass/time)
Vrreactor volume (m³)

Description

What is this formula?

Volumetric Loading Rate (VLR) represents the pollutant mass applied to a treatment reactor per unit volume and time.

When to use it

Use it when designing or evaluating biological reactors, trickling filters, biofilters, anaerobic digesters, packed-bed systems, and industrial wastewater treatment processes.

Example

Data:

Lin = 1800 kg/day

Vr = 3000 m³

Formula:

VLR = Lin / Vr

Substitution:

VLR = 1800 / 3000

Result:

VLR = 0.60 kg/m³·day

Applications

Biological reactor design, anaerobic digestion, trickling filters, biofilm reactors, industrial wastewater treatment, and process optimization.

Note

VLR is an operational loading parameter. The acceptable loading range depends on reactor type, contaminant characteristics, biomass activity, temperature, and treatment objectives. Excessive VLR values may reduce treatment performance and process stability.
