Variables
Description
What is this formula?
Solids Retention Time (SRT) represents the average time that biomass remains in a biological treatment system.
When to use it
Use it when designing or operating activated sludge systems, membrane bioreactors, biological nutrient removal systems, oxidation ditches, and other biological wastewater treatment processes.
Example
Data:
V = 3000 m³
X = 3500 mg/L
Qw = 80 m³/day
Xw = 8000 mg/L
Qe = 5000 m³/day
Xe = 15 mg/L
Formula:
SRT = (V×X)/(Qw×Xw + Qe×Xe)
Substitution:
SRT = (3000×3500)/(80×8000 + 5000×15)
Result:
SRT = 14.7 days
Applications
Activated sludge control, nitrification design, nutrient removal systems, sludge management, process optimization, and wastewater treatment plant operation.
Note
SRT is one of the most important operational parameters in biological treatment. Higher SRT values generally favor nitrification and slower-growing microorganisms, while lower SRT values increase sludge production and may reduce biological stability.
