Variables
Description
What is this formula?
This formula converts methane emissions into carbon dioxide equivalent emissions using the Global Warming Potential (GWP) factor.
When to use it
Use it when preparing greenhouse gas inventories, carbon footprint assessments, sustainability reports, climate impact studies, and ESG disclosures.
Example
Data:
CH4 = 100 kg
GWP = 28
Formula:
CO2e = CH4 × GWP
Substitution:
CO2e = 100 × 28
Result:
CO2e = 2800 kg CO2e
Applications
Greenhouse gas inventories, landfill gas assessments, wastewater treatment emissions, oil and gas operations, agricultural emissions, sustainability reporting, and climate accounting.
Note
This is an emission-equivalence calculation. The value of GWP depends on the reporting protocol and assessment period. Current international methodologies commonly use GWP values around 27–30 for methane over a 100-year horizon, although other values may be required by specific regulations or reporting frameworks.
