Fuel-Based Emission Rate
\[E_{poll}=FuelUse\cdot EF_{poll}\]

Variables

Epollpollutant emission rate (mass/time)
FuelUsefuel consumption rate (fuel unit/time)
EFpollpollutant emission factor (mass/fuel unit)

Description

What is this formula?

This formula calculates the emission rate of a pollutant from fuel consumption and a fuel-specific emission factor.

When to use it

Use it when estimating emissions from boilers, furnaces, generators, engines, heaters, industrial combustion systems, and fuel-burning equipment.

Example

Data:

FuelUse = 80 kg/h

EFpoll = 0.015 kg pollutant/kg fuel

Formula:

Epoll = FuelUse × EFpoll

Substitution:

Epoll = 80 × 0.015

Result:

Epoll = 1.2 kg/h

Applications

Emission inventories, industrial combustion analysis, environmental permitting, air quality studies, fuel switching evaluations, and regulatory reporting.

Note

This is an emission-factor-based estimate. The result depends on the selected emission factor, fuel composition, combustion technology, operating conditions, and pollution control equipment. Published emission factors may differ from site-specific measured values.
