Voltage Regulation
\[VR=\frac{V_{nl}-V_{fl}}{V_{fl}}\times100\]

Variables

VRvoltage regulation (%)
Vnlno-load voltage (V)
Vflfull-load voltage (V)

Description

What is this formula?

Voltage regulation measures the percentage change in voltage between no-load and full-load operating conditions.

When to use it

Use this formula when evaluating transformer performance, transmission line behavior, voltage stability, and electrical power quality.

Example

A transformer has:

No-load voltage = 240 V

Full-load voltage = 228 V

Formula:

VR = ((Vnl − Vfl)/Vfl) × 100

Substitution:

VR = ((240 − 228)/228) × 100

Result:

VR = 5.26%

Applications

Transformer testing

Transmission line analysis

Power quality studies

Electrical distribution systems

Voltage stability evaluation

Note

Voltage regulation is a performance indicator rather than a physical law. The value depends on load magnitude, load power factor, conductor impedance, transformer impedance, and system configuration. Lower voltage regulation generally indicates better voltage stability.
