What is this formula?
Surge Impedance Loading (SIL) represents the power level at which a transmission line naturally balances the reactive power generated by its capacitance with the reactive power absorbed by its inductance.
When to use it
Use this formula when analyzing high-voltage transmission lines, evaluating line loading conditions, planning power system expansion, and studying voltage regulation behavior.
Example
A transmission line operates at:
Line voltage = 230,000 V
Characteristic impedance = 300 Ω
Formula:
SIL = V² / Z0
Substitution:
SIL = (230000²) / 300
Result:
SIL = 176,333,333 W
SIL ≈ 176.3 MW

Note
SIL is an idealized transmission-line concept and is most useful for long high-voltage AC lines. Actual line loading depends on system stability limits, thermal limits, voltage constraints, network topology, and operating conditions. Many references express SIL in MW using kV and Ω, producing numerically convenient forms of the same equation.
