What is this formula?
The reflection coefficient quantifies the fraction of an electromagnetic wave that is reflected when it encounters an impedance discontinuity at the end of a transmission line.
When to use it
Use this formula when analyzing impedance matching, transmission lines, RF systems, antennas, microwave circuits, and signal integrity problems.
Example
A transmission line has:
Characteristic impedance = 50 Ω
Load impedance = 75 Ω
Formula:
Γ = (ZL − Z0)/(ZL + Z0)
Substitution:
Γ = (75 − 50)/(75 + 50)
Γ = 25/125
Result:
Γ = 0.20
This means that 20% of the incident wave amplitude is reflected.
