\[LF=\frac{P_{avg}}{P_{peak}}\]

Variables

LFload factor
Pavgaverage load demand (kW)
Ppeakpeak load demand (kW)

Description

What is this formula?

Load Factor measures how efficiently electrical demand is utilized over a period of time by comparing the average load to the peak load.

When to use it

Use this formula when evaluating electrical consumption patterns, utility demand charges, industrial energy efficiency, and power system utilization.

Example

A manufacturing plant has:

Average demand = 450 kW

Peak demand = 600 kW

Formula:

LF = Pavg / Ppeak

Substitution:

LF = 450 / 600

Result:

LF = 0.75

LF = 75%

Applications

Utility billing analysis

Industrial energy management

Power system planning

Demand-side management

Electrical load studies
