\[DF=\frac{P_{max}}{P_{conn}}\]

Variables

Pmaxmaximum demand (kW)
Pconnconnected load (kW)

Description

What is this formula?

Demand Factor compares the maximum electrical demand of a system with its total connected load.

When to use it

Use this formula when estimating electrical service capacity, sizing feeders, evaluating industrial installations, and planning power distribution systems.

Example

A building has:

Connected load = 800 kW

Maximum demand = 560 kW

Formula:

DF = Pmax / Pconn

Substitution:

DF = 560 / 800

Result:

DF = 0.70

DF = 70%

Applications

Electrical load estimation

Feeder and transformer sizing

Power distribution planning

Industrial electrical design

Utility demand analysis

Note

Demand Factor is an operational design ratio. It depends on how many connected loads operate simultaneously, so it should be selected or calculated according to the type of facility, usage pattern, and applicable electrical design standards.
