Transformer Voltage Ratio
\[\frac{V_s}{V_p}=\frac{N_s}{N_p}\]

Variables

Vssecondary voltage (V)
Vpprimary voltage (V)
Nsnumber of secondary turns
Npnumber of primary turns

Description

What is this formula?

This formula calculates the voltage ratio in an ideal transformer. The output voltage depends on the ratio between the number of turns in the secondary and primary coils.

When to use it

Use this equation when analyzing transformers, AC power systems, voltage conversion, and electromagnetic induction devices.

Example

A transformer has 200 turns in the primary coil and 800 turns in the secondary coil. The primary voltage is 120 V. Calculate the secondary voltage.

Data:

Np = 200

Ns = 800

Vp = 120 V

Formula:

Vs/Vp = Ns/Np

Substitution:

Vs/120 = 800/200

Result:

Vs = 480 V

Applications

- Electrical power distribution

- Voltage step-up systems

- Voltage step-down systems

- AC circuit design

- Transformer analysis
