What is this formula?
The induction motor slip equation calculates the relative difference between synchronous speed and actual rotor speed.
When to use it
Use this formula when analyzing induction motor performance, estimating torque production, evaluating motor loading, and troubleshooting electrical machines.
Example
An induction motor has:
Synchronous speed = 1800 rpm
Rotor speed = 1740 rpm
Formula:
s = (Ns - Nr) / Ns
Substitution:
s = (1800 - 1740) / 1800
Result:
s = 0.0333
s = 3.33%

Note
