Bypass Ratio
\[BR=\frac{B}{F}\]

Variables

BRbypass ratio
Bbypass flow rate (kg/s)
Ftotal feed flow rate (kg/s)

Description

What is this formula?

The bypass ratio quantifies the fraction of the feed stream that bypasses a processing unit and rejoins the main flow downstream without being treated.

When to use it

Use this formula when analyzing process flowsheets containing bypass lines around reactors, heat exchangers, separators, or treatment units. Bypass streams are commonly used to control temperature, concentration, humidity, or product quality.

Example

A process receives a total feed of 800 kg/h. To control outlet conditions, 120 kg/h bypasses the treatment unit.

Formula:

BR = B / F

Substitution:

BR = 120 / 800

Result:

BR = 0.15

The bypass stream represents 15% of the total feed flow.

Applications

- Heat exchanger bypass control

- Reactor temperature regulation

- Gas treatment systems

- Drying and humidification processes

- Process optimization and control
