Variables
Description
What is this formula?
Grain Moisture Content on Wet Basis calculates the percentage of water contained in a grain sample relative to its total wet mass.
When to use it
Use this formula when evaluating grain storage safety, drying requirements, harvest moisture, and commercial grain quality.
Example
Given:
Mw = 2.5 kg
Md = 17.5 kg
Formula:
MCwb = Mw / (Mw + Md) × 100
Substitution:
MCwb = 2.5 / (2.5 + 17.5) × 100
MCwb = 2.5 / 20 × 100
MCwb = 12.5%
Result:
The grain moisture content on wet basis is 12.5%.
Applications
- Grain drying calculations
- Silo storage management
- Harvest quality control
- Commercial grain grading
- Moisture monitoring in stored grain
Note
Wet basis moisture content expresses water mass as a percentage of the total wet grain mass. This is the most common moisture basis used in grain storage and commercial grain handling.
It should not be confused with dry basis moisture content, where water mass is divided by dry matter mass.
For safe storage, acceptable moisture limits depend on grain type, storage duration, temperature, aeration, and local standards.
