Total Dynamic Head
\[TDH=H_s+h_f\]

Variables

TDHtotal dynamic head (m)
Hsstatic head (m)
hffriction head loss (m)

Description

What is this formula?

Total Dynamic Head (TDH) represents the total head that a pump must overcome to move water through a hydraulic system. It combines the static elevation difference and the friction losses occurring in pipes and fittings.

When to use it

Use this formula when selecting irrigation pumps, designing pumping stations, evaluating system performance, or calculating pumping energy requirements.

Example

An irrigation system has:

Static head, Hs = 25 m

Friction losses, hf = 8 m

Formula:

TDH = Hs + hf

Substitution:

TDH = 25 + 8

TDH = 33 m

Result:

The pump must provide a total dynamic head of 33 m.

Applications

- Irrigation pump selection

- Agricultural pumping systems

- Well water extraction

- Pressurized irrigation networks

- Hydraulic system design
