Description

What is this formula?

The mechanical efficiency equation calculates the ratio between useful output power and total input power in a mechanical system.


When to use it

Use this formula when evaluating engines, motors, turbines, pumps, transmission systems, or any device that converts energy.


Example

A motor receives 5000 W of input power and delivers 4200 W of useful output power.


Data:

Pin = 5000 W

Pout = 4200 W


Formula:

eta = Pout/Pin


Substitution:

eta = 4200/5000


Result:

eta = 0.84
