Surface Area of a Triangular Prism

Surface Area of a Triangular Prism
\[SA = P L + 2 A_{base}\]

Variables

SA = surface area of triangular prism (m^2)
P = perimeter of triangular base (m)
L = length of prism (m)
A_base = area of triangular base (m^2)
a = side 1 of triangle (m)
b = side 2 of triangle (m)
c = side 3 of triangle (m)

Description

What is this formula?

This formula calculates the total surface area of a triangular prism by combining the lateral area and the two triangular bases.

When to use it

It is used when all faces of a triangular prism must be measured, including both triangular ends and rectangular side faces.

Example

If:

P = 12 m, L = 10 m, A_base = 6 m²

SA = 12*10 + 2*6

SA = 120 + 12 = 132 m²

- Engineering design

- Construction materials estimation
