Surface Area of a Rectangular Prism

Surface Area of a Rectangular Prism
\[A = 2(lw + lh + wh)\]

Variables

A = surface area (m²)
l = length of the prism (m)
w = width of the prism (m)
h = height of the prism (m)

Description

What is this formula?

This formula calculates the total surface area of a rectangular prism. It adds the areas of all six rectangular faces.

When to use it

Use this formula when calculating the total external area of box-shaped objects or structures.

Example

If a rectangular prism has:

length = 4 m

width = 3 m

height = 2 m

A = 2(4×3 + 4×2 + 3×2)

A = 2(12 + 8 + 6)

A = 52 m²

- Geometry and mathematics

- Construction and architecture

- Packaging design

- Surface coating calculations

- Engineering and manufacturing
