Lateral Surface Area of a Cylinder

Lateral Surface Area of a Cylinder
\[A_L = 2\pi rh\]

Variables

AL = lateral surface area (m²)
r = radius of the cylinder base (m)
h = height of the cylinder (m)

Description

What is this formula?

This formula calculates the lateral surface area of a cylinder. It represents only the curved outer surface, excluding the top and bottom circular bases.

When to use it

Use this formula when calculating the area of the curved side of cylindrical objects.

Example

If a cylinder has:

radius = 3 m

height = 5 m

A_L = 2π × 3 × 5

A_L = 30π

A_L ≈ 94.25 m²

Applications

- Geometry and mathematics

- Pipe and tank surface calculations

- Material estimation

- Engineering and manufacturing

- Industrial design
