Lateral Surface Area of a Cone

Lateral Surface Area of a Cone
\[A_L = \pi rl\]

Variables

AL = lateral surface area (m²)
r = radius of the cone base (m)
l = slant height of the cone (m)

Description

What is this formula?

This formula calculates the lateral surface area of a cone. It represents only the curved outer surface and excludes the circular base.

When to use it

Use this formula when calculating the curved surface area of conical objects.

Example

If a cone has:

radius = 4 m

slant height = 7 m

A_L = π × 4 × 7

A_L = 28π

A_L ≈ 87.96 m²
