Spherical Cap Surface Area

Spherical Cap Surface Area
\[A=2\pi rh\]

Variables

A = spherical cap surface area
r = sphere radius
h = cap height

Description

What is this formula?

This formula calculates the curved surface area of a spherical cap. A spherical cap is the portion of a sphere cut by a plane.

When to use it

Use this formula when calculating the exposed curved area of domes, spherical sections, lenses, or partially cut spheres.

Example

If the sphere radius is 6 m and the cap height is 2 m:

A = 2π(6)(2)

A ≈ 75.40 m²

Applications

- Geometry and mathematics

- Dome surface calculations

- Architectural design

- Mechanical engineering

- Surface coating estimation

- Optical lens manufacturing
