Variables
Description
What is this formula?
Material Usage Variance (MUV) measures the cost impact of using more or less material than the amount allowed by the standard cost system for the actual level of production.
A positive variance generally indicates excessive material consumption, while a negative variance indicates more efficient material utilization.
When to use it
Use this formula to evaluate production efficiency, waste levels, process control, and material consumption performance within a standard costing system.
Example
A factory produces 1,000 units of product.
Data:
Actual Material Used = 5,500 kg
Standard Quantity Allowed = 5,000 kg
Standard Price = $4/kg
Formula:
MUV=(AQ-SQ)SP
Substitution:
MUV=(5,500-5,000)×4
MUV=2,000
Result:
Material Usage Variance = $2,000 unfavorable
Applications
Manufacturing cost control
Production efficiency analysis
Waste reduction programs
Standard costing systems
Operational performance evaluation
Note
Material Usage Variance is an accounting performance metric and not a physical law. The result depends on the quality of the standards established by the organization. Different companies may use slightly different definitions of standard quantities depending on their production processes and costing systems.
