Description
What is this formula?
Percent precipitation quantifies the fraction of a dissolved species that has been removed from solution by precipitation.
When to use it
Use this formula to evaluate the efficiency of precipitation processes, chemical separations, water treatment systems, and analytical procedures.
Example
Given:
Initial calcium concentration = 0.100 mol/L
Final calcium concentration = 0.015 mol/L
Formula:
P = ((C0 − Cf)/C0) × 100
Substitution:
P = ((0.100 − 0.015)/0.100) × 100
Result:
P = 85%
Eighty-five percent of the dissolved calcium was removed by precipitation.
Applications
Water treatment
Chemical separations
Analytical chemistry
Environmental engineering
Industrial process optimization
Note
This formula measures removal efficiency based on concentration changes and does not directly identify the precipitated compound. The calculation assumes that the decrease in dissolved concentration is primarily caused by precipitation. In real systems, adsorption, filtration losses, sampling errors, or side reactions may also contribute to concentration changes.
