Description

What is this formula?


Percent yield compares the actual amount of product obtained in a chemical reaction with the theoretical maximum amount predicted by stoichiometry.


When to use it


Use this formula after a reaction has been completed to evaluate reaction efficiency, product recovery, or losses caused by incomplete conversion, side reactions, purification, or handling.


Example


Given:


Actual product mass = 7.8 g

Theoretical product mass = 10.0 g


Formula:


Y = (mactual / mth) × 100


Substitution:


Y = (7.8 / 10.0) × 100


Result:


Y = 78%


The reaction produced 78% of the theoretical maximum product.
