Variables
Description
What is this formula?
This formula calculates the amount of energy released when a given mass of a biological substrate is oxidized. The parameter Y represents the specific energy yield of the substrate.
Typical values are:
Carbohydrates: approximately 4 kcal/g
Proteins: approximately 4 kcal/g
Fats: approximately 9 kcal/g
Alcohol: approximately 7 kcal/g
When to use it
Use this formula to estimate caloric production from nutrient metabolism, dietary analysis, exercise physiology, and energy balance calculations.
Example
A person metabolizes 50 g of fat.
Data:
m = 50 g
Y = 9 kcal/g
Formula:
E = mY
Substitution:
E = 50 × 9
E = 450 kcal
Result:
Energy released = 450 kcal
Applications
- Nutrition analysis
- Calorie calculations
- Sports nutrition
- Metabolic studies
- Diet formulation
- Energy balance assessment
Note
This formula is an approximation based on average physiological energy yields of nutrients. Actual energy extraction may vary depending on digestive efficiency, metabolic pathways, health status, and measurement method. Different nutritional systems may report slightly different caloric values for the same substrate.
