Description

What is this formula?

Percent purity by titration determines the fraction of a sample that corresponds to the desired pure substance. The amount of pure analyte is obtained from titration data and compared with the total sample mass.

When to use it

Use this formula when evaluating the purity of chemical products, pharmaceutical ingredients, industrial raw materials, fertilizers, acids, bases, or laboratory reagents.

Example

A 5.00 g sample of commercial sodium carbonate is analyzed by titration. The titration results indicate that the sample contains 4.60 g of pure sodium carbonate.

Data:

mp = 4.60 g

ms = 5.00 g

Formula:

%P = (mp/ms) × 100

Substitution:

%P = (4.60/5.00) × 100

Result:

%P = 92.0%

The sample purity is 92.0%.

Applications

- Pharmaceutical quality control

- Reagent certification

- Industrial process control

- Food chemistry

- Agricultural products

- Raw material verification

Note

The accuracy of the purity calculation depends on the accuracy of the titration and the stoichiometric conversion used to determine the mass of pure analyte. Different analytical methods may yield slightly different purity values depending on assumptions and measurement uncertainties.
