What is this formula?


Mass percent concentration expresses the mass of solute as a percentage of the total mass of the solution. It is one of the most common concentration units in chemistry, food science, pharmaceuticals, and industrial processes.


When to use it


Use this formula when concentrations are specified by weight rather than volume, especially in formulations, industrial mixtures, concentrated acids, and quality control applications.


Example


A solution contains 15 g of sodium chloride dissolved in a total solution mass of 200 g.


Data:


ms = 15 g

mSol = 200 g


Formula:


w% = (ms/mSol) × 100


Substitution:


w% = (15/200) × 100


Result:


w% = 7.5%


The solution contains 7.5% sodium chloride by mass.
