What is this formula?


The retention factor (Rf) is a dimensionless quantity used in planar chromatography to describe the relative movement of a compound compared to the solvent front.


When to use it


Use this formula in thin-layer chromatography (TLC) and paper chromatography to identify compounds and compare chromatographic behavior.


Example


Given:


Compound distance = 4.5 cm


Solvent front distance = 7.5 cm


Formula:


Rf = dc/ds


Substitution:


Rf = 4.5/7.5


Result:


Rf = 0.60
