Variables
Description
What is this formula?
Relative retention compares the retention times of two compounds chromatographed under identical conditions.
It is commonly used to identify compounds and compare chromatographic behavior.
When to use it
Use this formula when comparing analytes in gas chromatography (GC), high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), or other chromatographic techniques.
Example
Given:
Retention time of compound 1 = 5.0 min
Retention time of compound 2 = 8.5 min
Formula:
α = tR2/tR1
Substitution:
α = 8.5/5.0
Result:
α = 1.70
Compound 2 is retained 1.70 times longer than compound 1.
Applications
Gas chromatography
HPLC
Compound identification
Method development
Analytical chemistry
Note
Relative retention is only meaningful when both compounds are measured under identical chromatographic conditions.
Values greater than 1 indicate that compound 2 is retained longer than compound 1.
